Learn how to check your vehicle before you drive. Check your tires, mirrors, brake lights, turn signals, seatbelts, emergency brake, horn, clean windshield with no obstructions or cracks, current registration, and proof of insurance.

Learn the difference between white and yellow lines on the road. Broken lines means you can pass, and solid lanes means you cannot. Solid double yellow lines mean no passing, unless you are making a turn, you are in a carpool lane, or there is road construction.

Three times of road signs exist. White regulatory signs are for rules you must obey, yellow warning signs for potential hazards, and orange highway construction and maintenance signs.

Speed limit signs are for ideal conditions with dry roads and good visibility. Basically, use your common sense - slow down in bad weather and in road construction. Driving slower can be dangerous, so merge to the right lane if you need to.

Use the right-of-way principle. At uncontrolled intersections, yield to vehicles already in the intersection or that arrives before you. At T-intersections, through traffic has the right-of-way. Always yield to pedestrians.

You may enter intersections on green or yellow lights. Stop on a yellow light if it is safe to do so. Wait for all pedestrians before you go forward. Green arrows are protected turns, where other traffic stops for your vehicle.

Learn how to safely merge lanes. First signal, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder to check you blind spots. If clear, move to the lane.

Remember for turns, use your signal, mirrors, look over your shoulder, and merge when safe. Learn how to merge into mike and turn lanes. Also, know the specifics of left turns and right turns and their respective turn lanes.

Pedestrians have the right-of-way at marked and unmarked crossings. If they step off the curb, you must stop. When emergency vehicles have their lights on, you must move to the far right side of the road and stop; if you are already in an intersection, go through and stop as soon as you cross. School buses with flashing red lights means children are crossing - you must stop unless you are on the other side of a raised barrier.

White curbs are for loading/unloading passengers. Yellow curbs are for loading/unloading passengers or freight. Green curbs are for limited time parking. Blue is for disabled parking. Red is no parking or stopping any time. Do not park in the following conditions - in front of a No Parking sign, in front of a fire hydrant, in an intersection, on a crosswalk or sidewalk, in front of a driveway, on a railroad track, or on the wrong side of the street. For downhil parking, turn your wheels towards the curb. For uphill parking, turn your wheels away from the curb. Set your parking brake.

Do not drive when impaired or tired. You should not drive generally for mor ethan 4 hours at a time. Take at least a 20 minute break.

The Three Second Rule - pick mark on the road ahead - wait for the car ahead to pass, then start counting - One thousand One, One thousand two, one thousand three. Your car should pass the park on the three second mark. In bad weather, increase this to four or five seconds.

If you have bicyclists and trucks on the road, deal with one at a time. Try not to deal with two hazards at once if possible. Determine which is a riskier danger, like playing children. Orange triangles indicate slow-moving vehicles. It is only legal to use your horn to avoid an accident. Passing is dangerous, requiring 1/3 of a mile visibility to do so. Slow-moving vehicles must pull over at the first available turnout if five or more vehicles are behind it. Before passing, signal, check mirrors, and check over soldier to pass. Make sure there is enough space between you and the vehicle you pass before returning to your lane - make sure you can see both headlights of the car behind you in your rear view mirror.

Whenever you must use your wipers, your headlights must also be on. Turn on your headlights on in fog, heavy cloud cover, and when it is snowing. Even on sunny days, headlights make you more visible to other drivers. High beams are good for roads with no street lights. Make sure to turn them off if there are oncoming vehicles approaching. Do not use high beams in rain, snow, or foggy conditions.

Adjust your driving to adverse conditions. If you cannot see 100 feet in front of you, it is dangerous to go faster than 30 mph. Increase your following distance on wet and slippery roads. At night, slow down a little and watch carefully for pedestrians and motorcyclists. Also, watch the right side of your lane further up the road to avoid being blinded by oncoming vehicles. Steep hills, mountains, and other terrain may create poor visibility. Slow down in these conditions.

Unsafe lane changes by not checking your blind spot - use the signal, look in the mirror, look over your shoulder, then merge into the lane.

When making a left turn with oncoming traffic, yield be before you yield. Solid green lights are not the same as green arrows for left turns.

Make a complete stop. Pausing or rolling stops do not count. Also remember not to stop over limit lines. At limit lines - stop, look both ways, and procede if safe. Stop if you see a school bus with a flashing stop sign, no matter what direction you are going.

On double left turn lanes, stay within your own designated lane. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with lane markings, as changing lanes in the middle of intersections is extremely dangerous.

Be aware of speed limits at all times. In bad weather, you will need to slow down. When merging onto a highway, you will need to speed up to avoid getting rear-ended. Be careful of school zones.

Be sure to actually prepare for the driving test. Do all of our tests, simulators, and watch all of the videos we have here. Do not just focus on one thing - constantly apply all the knowledge learned here. Play more driving games and simulators we have. Hitting the curb is a disqualification. When backing up, turn your head, not out the front window.

Make sure you know where everything is on the vehicle. Be able to locate the wipers, headlights, emergency/parking brake, turn signal, defrosters, and hazard lights. Test the brakes so you know the pressure needed so as not to give your examiner whiplash. Some parking brakes are controlled by a hand lever, while others are pedals.

Do not just drive forward. Look for all hazards, signs, and other vehicles in all directions. Right of way does not mean that other drivers will obey. Scan left and right when making turns. Scanning saves lives.

Cautiousness is good, but too much will affect the overall flow of traffic. At four-way stops, go when you are supposed to, and do not mess up the rhythm. Be assertive when you are supposed to.You may go when it is clear opposed to when there are no cars. When examiners intervene on your driving test, this means they are likely docking points. Driving too slow is a critical error on the test - for example, 10 mph below the speed limit when driving conditions are good.

Make sure you know about different traffic elements, like roundabouts or traffic circles. Remember the different driving methods in rural, urban, driving, and school zones. If no speed limit is posted, speed limits may be 25 or 30 mph depending on the state. Try our simulators and play more driving games.

Familiarize yourself when points may be deducted and what critical errors are. Critical errors involve serious hazards - not understanding your vehicle, traffic laws, or how to respond to traffic situations. If examiners intervene or other drivers make evasive maneuvers to avoid accidents, you will fail the test.

Many drivers are too nervous when they take the test. Familiarize yourself with driving - practice, practice, practice. Do our tests here, watch these videos, play the simulators, and practice driving on the road.

Place your left hand at 10 o'clock and your right hand at 2 o'clock. Other driving instructors suggest using a 9 o'clock 3 o'clock approach. Ask your own driving instructor which method is ok on your driving exam.

You may use the hand over hand technique, but ask your specific driving instructor if the 9 o'clock 3 o'clock is ok in your state. The general technique is 10 o'clock 2 o'clock.

These techniques are for Canadian drivers, and just as appropriate for American drivers. Always have one hand on the steering wheel.

Learn the push, pull, and slide method of turning. Remember to first signal to other drivers, then turn. Be careful of this turning method, as some driving instructors may not support this method!

Back into a driveway when safe, and the pull out in the opposite direction. This a safe alternative to making a U-turn.

Before even beginning your behind-the-wheel test. The car must be in proper working order and the driver must have the proper paperwork. You need your appointment slip, I.D., and proof of insurance. Release and reset the parking brake, then demonstrate hand signals for slowing/stopping and turns. Know which are the brake and gas pedals. Check the brake lights, turn signals, and license tabs.

Learn how to back up your vehicle up safely. This methods is used when backing out of a driveway or alley. Turn your head and look through the back window, and stay 18 inches away from the curb.

Put your left hand in the center of the wheel, put your right hand on the passenger head rest, look back, and reverse slowly. Stop before you look forward again.

Turn the steering wheel to the right, then back to the left while backing in, then pull forward. Be aware of cars in front and back of your vehicle. Make sure your tires are within 12 inches of the curb.

Be aware of what is going on ALL AROUND your car. When making right turns, stay in the far-right lane. Do not just use your rear-view and side mirrors - physically turn your head. Check all of your blind spots.

Get even with the vehicle in front, turn wheel all the way to the right, then reverse slowly. When the back right tire is lined up with the vehicle in back, turn the wheel to the left.

Learn another trick how to parallel park. Get 2 to 3 feet away from the car in front, crank the wheel al the way to the right, go in reverse until the back bumper is even with your window, crank the wheel straight, reverse until the bumperis even with your front bumper, crank the wheel the other direction, reverse, and there is no need to go forward.

There are 8 blind spots on a vehicle - 2 in each direction. Physically turn your head and body to check the blind spots. Your mirrors do not tell you if it is safe to change lanes.

Adjust your rear view mirror so you only need to use your eyes to see behind your vehicle. Side mirrors are for seeing cars in other lanes. Mirrors do not show what are in your blind spots.

High and low beams, dome lights, and emergency hazard lights. Learn how to use the lights in your car and safety features in this video. Remember where the controls are for these lights, as the location varies vehicle to vehicle.

Learn how to properly sit within your vehicle. Many people avoid this, but it is important in case you get into an accident. Know the proper placement of your feet.

Adjust your steering wheel according to your height. Too high and too low can be dangerous if you have air bags. Proper control of vehicle is most important.

Learn about certain systems in your car like the front and rear defrosters, in addition to settings on windshield wipers. Remember to check the location of these features, as each vehicle may vary in the placement.
